    What is an excavation?

    Man made cut, trench in an earth surface formed by earth removal.

    A trench is narrow underground excavation that is deeper than it is wide, and is no wider than 4.5m.

     

    What are hazards in excavation?

    • Collapse of Excavation wall
    • Underground utilities
    • Fall of removed soil
    • Fall of tools or equipment
    • Surface or ground water
    • Nearby structures
    • Fall of vehicle
    • Improper access and egress
    • Overhead lines
    • Presence of toxic gases
    • Adverse weather

     

    What are control measures for excavation?

    • Permit to work
    • Excavation Certificate
    • Area scanning
    • Check soil and do sloping or shoring or benching accordingly
    • Barricade and safety signs (hard barricade 1.2 m)
    • Keep 1 m edge clear
    • Underground utilities (Cable Detector, plan or drawing of underground or trail pit)
    • Provide safe access and egress
