Evaluation of contractors should be carried out to identify and select the best contractor for the project. It also helps in minimizing the incidents at the workplace as it is checked whether the contractor is competent enough to carry out the project safely.
The contractor can be evaluated based on safety performance, incident rates, safety management system, previous projects, and competency of personnel.
A pool of contractors can be created by conducting an evaluation of contractors, and projects can be assigned to them based on their quality, capability, and competency.
The following should be checked to evaluate the contractor in terms of safety.
- Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy sighted and current.
- HSE Responsibilities are evident in the Policy.
- Hazard identification, risk assessment and control.
- Site safety management planning and safe work methods (for construction project work).
- Safe work/operating procedures.
- Provision of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for any hazardous chemicals to be used.
- Hazard/incident reporting & investigation.
- Use of personal protective equipment.
- Use of warning signage, barriers etc.
- Site induction of contractor’s employees.
- Contractor licenses or accreditation required by legislation held and current?
- Any task-specific training needs.
