What is Lock Out / Tag Out

Lock Out / Tag Out also known as LOTO, is a safety procedure to isolate energy from the system such as isolation of process piping, equipment or vessel from hazardous material using blinding and safety value. It may be mechanical or electrical isolation.

Lock out involves isolating energy from the system (a machine, equipment, or process) which physically locks the system while tag out involves labeling with the information why lock out is required, time of lock out, and name of authorized person.
